International Beer Fest Lineup

If ginger cleanses the palate in between sushi rolls…does it work for various types of beer? GLE released their selections for this years International Beer Fest

Bell’s Brewery Hopslam & Sparkling Ale
Brooklyn Brewery Monster Ale
Clipper City Brewery Heavy Seas Peg Leg
Dogfish Head Beer 120 IPA, Pangaea, & Sah’Tea
Founders Brewing Co. (Official) Imperial Stout
Thirsty Dog Brewing Co. Barrel-Aged Siberian Night
Three Floyds Brewing Behemoth, Dreadnaught, & Moloko

I’ve had most of these, albeit not all on tap…I’m probably going to stick solely with Dogfish Head and Three Floyds…

I’m particularly excited about 120 Minute IPA on tap .. it’s only brewed a few times a year, goes fast…and is about 18% ABV and 120IBU. I’ve never had Pangaea and Sah’Tea nor have I tried Three Floyds Behemoth or Moloko….I have had Dreadnaught before on tap and it’s excellent…probably buy a pint of that but save one of my samples for something else.

I’ve had Bell’s Hopslam, not interested in the Sparkling Ale… Clipper City Peg Leg is supposed to be a very flavorful Imperial Stout…but, really I’ve yet to meet an Imperial Stout that really distinguishes itself.

I’ve had the Founder’s and absolutely HATE anything Bourbon Barrel.

Looks like I have my lineup for the day.

Happy Derby De Mayo

Only today have I learned about Owensboro’s truly authentic, family owned, Mexican restaurant, La Reina De Mexico. It’s half-market, half-restaurant and all incredible. Dispelling the notion that true Mexican food is hot while ensuring a proper blend of flavor and spice throughout the dishes. It’s safe to say this is now my favorite Mexican restaurant in town…

…and like Saw Asian Market I’m going to have do to some experimenting in the kitchen. Hopefully, with better results.

Ah yes… $3 Oberon this evening….It couldn’t have worked out any better for my taste buds or pocketbook. So, Team Shelto- won another week… Somehow, delightful beer and trivia turned into my name being passed up to join my neighborhood alliance (trying to get on the board)

Oh, and a certain person saying I should call the Chamber and get involved with the Greater Owensboro Chamber Young Professionals. Going to do that first thing tomorrow.

…at what other bar could that happen? when was the last time you walked into Taylor’s and something like this happened? … I don’t think it ever has

The way I figure it–I’m going to be here for a while…I want to know what’s going on in my town and I’d love to have a say. I’m nervous about trying so much…but,  I like the way I’m doing it…I’ve tried many different things…some I’ve enjoyed and have been beneficial…others have been a waste and I’ve distanced myself.

However, I’ve approached each as a new opportunity and haven’t became hung up/fixated on just one thing….and that’s novel for me.

Downtown is going to fail

I love how it took 4 concrete trees to motivate the people of Owensboro to start paying attention to local politics. I think the city is trying to do too much, too fast and are wasting/have wasted several opportunities already. What is this about a second hotel across the street from the Hampton Inn and Suites? So we’re going to have a Holiday Inn Express and Hampton Inn and Suites. Don’t we already have those? Why not build something unique to the town? Don’t let this be like the 54 development was and simply mirror existing businesses.

I wonder if building a second hotel with about 100 rooms has anything to do with the fact the Hampton Inn and Suites has 100 rooms less than what was originally called for?….

There was a public forum last week on what to do with the old State building…

Suggestions included: Indoor Race Track (Had it on 54…it closed) Hooters, Rafferty’s and other equally bad ideas. What about matching funds and helping the Bluegrass Museum move over like originally intended?

Banning public vendors in order to preserve the restaurants open is also ridiculous. I was hoping for a Boardwalkesque atmosphere with a permanent location for a farmers market… Nope. Also, why block a location for an authentic pizza parlor (only one in town that would have a brick oven to the best of my knowledge) because it doesn’t “fit into the spirit of downtown.”

Don’t get me wrong…I support the initiative completely and it’s great to see Owensboro moving in some direction but… I just wish it was more unique to the town.

Gambrinus

Oh Gambrinus, the only bar in town I actually enjoy. They’re introducing a new brewery tonight.. Sixpoint Ales, Resin.

Review stolen from (Ale)Chemy Brew:

Taste - Taste is similarly pungent, lots of fresh grapefruit, pine resin, and tropical fruit hop flavors with a solid caramel malt base and a long-lasting bitterness. Nicely balanced considering the size, maybe too balanced considering I was hoping for a more aggressive hop profile. Still, makes for a tasty sipper. (4/5)

I love trying new tasty beers. This, two new mystery beers on tap and Live Team Trivia tonight… tonight is going to be some much needed fun.

What I’m excited about though.is the 2nd International Beer Festival going on during the BBQ fest. Actually, not so excited…they’re only doing six tastings from 12 new brewst his year while last year they had 12 tastings for the same price. $30 for about 6 small samples of beer…

Now I’m disappointed.

Pretty sure I just bombed one of my XHTML/CSS cases… there was something really simple that didn’t quite click…so, none of it worked…but most of it is right…the selector doesn’t properly match the HTML. .I just hear the child of the parent nested in the… and just brain fart.

The good news is I have a 98% in that class so I’m not worried..just need to swing by during office hours and figure out what I did wrong.

Right now, I’m just wasting time until my food digests so I can go run…and by run I mean use the elliptical and bike…it’s the only thing I can do to avoid my knee exploding. Also, I decided to put off my surgery…I’m *not* getting it done in Owensboro. I’m trying to get a referral to someone in .. Nasvhille I think… Also looking at an orthopedic surgeon in Lexington. Think I’ll want a super ho w/ cheesy tots when I come out from under? lol

Anyone want to go to ROMP? $28 for a single day pass…I just want to go Friday for Bawn in the Mash and Old Crow Medicine Show.

I’m a reasonable man get off my case

It’s been a pretty productive day…I think I’m compensating for lying around the house and having a lazy Sunday. Deep cleaned the house, got an oil change, cleaned and vacuumed out the car and bought some upholstery cleaner to get out a few stains on the seats. It got the stains out alright but now everything else looks grungy…going to have to rent a steam cleaner…somehow I don’t think my little hand brush is fit for the job. But, for an 11 year old car…she looks pretty good and is in good shape.

Got a good workout in…weights + 30 minutes of speed walking up and down the incline of the boat ramp at English Park….My calves are burning and it feels awesome…. I REALLY wish I could find a buddy who wanted to lose weight with me though. Just someone to talk about this kinda stuff w/o being annoying.

On a completely opposite note….

Owensboro needs street food. I found out today there’s actually an ordnance against street vendors except on special occasions like the BBQ Fest….and I don’t mean your typical crap like Hot Dogs and Corn Dogs… I mean something with substance. Maybe some local bbq kebobs…even something sponsored by Moonlite or Old Hickory would be a start.

I’d prefer something culturally different but real authentic restaurants have a hard enough time as it is.. Hell, copy somewhere else… bratwurst , philly cheesesteak, a taco truck, pizza by the slice… Anything. I think street vendors add a little bit of life to an area

Maybe by the time the convention center is open and the new riverfront is completed street vendors might be able to make it.
