the sleeper must awaken

You’ll have to excuse the quality of the picture but here’s my new solid cherry entertainment cabinet. Hey, wait… so, considering I have cherry endtables and a coffee table…does this mean I have a matching living room suite now? That’s never happened.

As you can tell, I don’t exactly have enough new stuff to fill it yet…but, isn’t that the fun part about moving/building/growing? Give it some time and I’m sure I’ll be running out of room once more.

I really really like it though. The coolest part about it is the light behind the center glass doors… This is the first time, well, in my life I haven’t had a entertainment center that’s on life support. Feels good!

Anyone know where I can get a good price on some patio furniture? Once finals are over my friends and I are putting up a six foot privacy fence around the backyard. I need to call and get the yard surveyed first though.

Already looking at lights to mount up. I’m looking forward to inviting people over and having them lounge around my backyard for a change.

I feel a bit like an idiot having made that roads post earlier… this whole entire experience is a series of firsts and new memories. Just gotta keep doing new things and broadening ones horizons. Don’t be stagnant. So yeah, change can suck… and but it can also provide a place for summer backyard bbq’s…

Cannot wait!

I’ve spent the past several hours *deep* cleaning my house. I don’t even remember cleaning it this well before I moved in…I was simply so excited to have a place of my own I just setup shop.

I figured doing some spring cleaning was just the break I needed from coding this web site and my final project for WS2K8 AD.

It’s Saturday night and I smell like pine sol…and I’m cool with that. Although, I’m a bit lonely. It’s very very difficult to meet the type of people I *want* to meet right now.

Yes, I’m being selective. Yes, I think it’s perfectly appropriate.

But, there might be some good things on the horizon…or at least some interesting things…It’s definitely going to be interesting.

I’m doing my first community service project w/ ACM at the Elizabeth Munday Senior Center this Wed to install a print server and do a routine cleanup of their computers… (No, that isn’t the interesting thing…I just completely switched subjects)

I’ll be meeting w/ Cheryl over the summer to prepare for the fall recruitment drive and to meet professional ACM members in the community (remember how I was talking about expanding my professional network…uh, I think I just found a way)

Whatever happens…I’m looking forward to what the future holds.

I hope it stays hot and dry long enough for me to mow…the downside about having a low lying yard is it takes a little longer for it to dry up.

Discovered a con about having a house: Ants. Every three months at my old apartment someone would come in and spray. Now, I’ve found out I need to be spraying inside the house and the perimeter of the house.

So, uh, any suggestions on how exactly to do that?

They’re coming up beside the bathroom sink of all places…nary a one in the kitchen. I don’t understand. I freaking scrubbed and deep cleaned the entire bathroom (including the vanity) less than a week ago.

*Shrugs*

Bad: Fridge is leaking and there is no maintenance guy or landlord to call. It’s me.

Good: Getting it fixed. Admittedly, it was something ridiculously simple but still.. it feels pretty good

Next on the list of improvements I can do at a low cost is trying to fix my sofa bed. One of the support bars broke when I was moving it and I lost a spring. This’ll be fun.

Spring Break ends Monday and I’ll register for my last semester of classes before I graduate w/ my AAS – IT / NAO….only took 7 and a half years. Jeez, better late than never I suppose. As of midterms I’m on track to make another 4.0 and after all the crap that’s happened I have a 3.2… not too bad.

(mostly) finished utility room

Latest work on the house…Part of this has been done for a while but I had to reprioritize. You can’t really tell but the pipes on the far right are from the water heater and the grey box behind the washer is disguising all of the plumbing as this was originally a small bedroom for a kid. So I had to run the gas and water under the house to the back room.

Anyway, the only thing left to do is clear out those makeshift shelves of tools and build a closet/pantry…and maybe an old school folding ironing board…that’d be kinda cool

Oh, and if the washer lid looks broken, the hose is inside of it…haven’t hooked it up yet.

We took a trip to Garden Grove…

Today has been an amazing day… new glasses are on order and I just picked up a new Craftsman lawn mower and gas powered weed eater–I’ve never been this excited about lawn tools in my life. Unfortunately, they’re in my parents garage until I get a shed for the backyard… I probably could have waited a few months but I got a really good deal on them and couldn’t pass it up.

The square yard garden is looking like it’ll happen. There are a few other things that need to go right but it definitely hasn’t been forgotten… I’m just trying to prioritize. I’d rather put up a fence because well, frankly, I hate people coming into my yard.

Things are finally getting going again and I couldn’t be happier. There is so much beauty in the world.. and it’s important to find it in all things. Lately, I’ve been having to make some tough choices and cut a few people loose… I wouldn’t call them toxic… but, definitely not healthy.

Oh, I almost forgot. Now that my amateur radio license is in I can submit an application to get a personalized amateur radio license plate with my call sign. I thought that was pretty neat.

Time to fire up the grill and try out my recipe for some lemon peppered salmon. Yum!

The Times They Are a-Changin’

I’ve completely moved into my house…it’s still not done…and it’s probably going to take a little bit longer than I originally planned to finish. With tuition coming up, books, Christmas, and some preventative car maintenance it’s going to be a bit of a drain.

Putting in a change of address later today, going to go update my driver’s license next week and it’ll be official…and despite the house not being finished it’s still in great shape. Besides, how many people are fortunate enough to renovate an empty house? Most people just move stuff around when they have to and that’s what I’m planning on doing. It’s still going to get done…just gonna take a little more time

But, last night was great. First “official” night in the new house. Bought a bottle of wine, hooked up my surround sound system…jumped around like an idiot and started to arrange things. Surprisingly, most everything is unboxed and arranged. Still have to transfer my internet service

I’m very very excited

Future Projects

I’ve stumbled upon a great square foot gardening website full of valuable information. Ideally, I’d like to have three 4×4 beds but to be honest, I’d settle for one the first time around just for the experience and to say I did it. There are a few things that could prevent it this spring though. There are places in the yard where water accumulates and I need a truck load or two of dirt. I’m hoping to avoid those places but I really need a good rain to see the damage. Also, I don’t know if the privacy fence will be up by then–both neighbors have kids and animals and I don’t want to leave anything to chance.

I’m walking around visualizing all the little things I want to do while focusing on big picture stuff like actually getting things finished…so, I’ve jotted down a little list of future projects

Future House Projects:

  • Put up a 6-foot privacy fence around the backyard.
  • Build a pantry — I have a ~ 3×7 empty space by the back door. I’d like to take half and use it for a storage closet and use the other half to build a pantry. This will be used for both food disaster prep and storage for really good deals.
  • Cabinets or shelves in the utility room
  • Add closet shelves
  • Build a shed — Not worried about this part just yet but it would be nice to have a place to store a mower and other yard tools.
