I swear, I’ve spent more time in Henderson this past week than I have in the past few years combined. Right now though I’m simply wasting time while this automated process completes.

What can I say about the show aside from it being a completely amazing experience? Let me preface this by saying I’m not a big Dave Matthews Band fan–or more accurately, I’m not very familiar with their music. I’ve enjoyed what I’ve heard and when the opportunity came along to broaden that exposure I jumped on it wholeheartedly.

Lance Wilkerson said it best, “You’re at a two-night show at Alpine for your first concert. You have been spoiled and you’ll find no other show will compare.” I haven’t been to another show yet but based on my experience at Alpine I can imagine it holding true. Starting it off Saturday Night was tailgating in the VIP parking area…the only person I knew was my friend Jeff who I went with. By the time it was time to enter the venue it was as if I knew these people for ages. Aside from Bonnaroo, I’ve never met a more good-natured, friendly, accepting group of people at a concert before. The delicious BBQ probably helped a little bit.

After the first show Saturday I was told how lucky I was to have gotten Blue Water partial…apparently that song never gets played. All in all Dave played for about three hours.

Sunday was a bit more relaxed considering we were didn’t have to drive from Chicago up to Milwaukee. It allowed us to move at a more leisurely place–and spend more time tailgating. Sadly, we didn’t have VIP parking for the second night…only took us about 15-20 minutes from our car to where Lance and his friends had their stuff setup. Mostly the same group of people, including the Penguin mascot. Ah, I wish my phone had signal in here…I’ll upload some pics and the setlist when I get home.

Night two was definitely my favorite. Better set list and a more relaxed vibe all around added to the enjoyment. 40,000 people both nights to a sold out show. We managed to get seats right behind the pit.

There’s not much to add except for I can definitely see from the band to the fans why everyone says that coming to Alpine is a magical experience.

…I lied, there is one more thing…I’m still more excited about getting to see the smashing pumpkins again this Saturday!!!

When I worked at Computers Plus I always looked forward to doing on-sites…specifically the ones that were out of town. Back then it was a great way to break up the monotony. After all, doing the exact same work day in and day out became mindnumbing…

Well, my new job–doesn’t have a routine. There is no grind. Going different places, doing different things…all without a set schedule. Today took me to Henderson. Funny enough, one of the businesses was only a few blocks away from the one I worked at when I was w/ CP. The best part? After the job was over…I was on my own time. Which meant my two favorite things: Coffee and driving around aimlessly!

Things are looking up!

EDIT: My favorite show of the moment? Entourage. I swore to never watch it for fear it was just another vapid fantasy. That was until I caught an episode at a buddys house…It’s hilarious! Whoever does the music has excellent taste as well: The Eels, Interpol, Del tha funkee homosapian, De La Soul, G Love…I could go on.

The year is starting to wind down. With two months to go I started thinking about differences between this year and last. What I’m after, interested in, yearn for, strive for…those are all internal differences. I’d have to say the biggest observable change this year has been taste in music. I dived head first into EDM and haven’t looked back. I think of the friends I talk to the most and almost all of them have been met as a result of the edm scene

But, one thing still holds true…My love for the Smashing Pumpkins hasn’t diminished! haha.

“Is it bright where you are
Have the people changed
Does it make you happy you’re so strange
And in your darkest hour, I hold secret’s flame
You can watch the world devoured in its pain”

Speaking of, Billy has decided to change his release format to individually released songs vs the typical album organization. There will be 44 songs, released individually and divided up into 11, 4 track sets. I wouldn’t mind the EP format, a la American Gothic, but individual tracks? While I’m very anxious to hear the new direction of SP–especially without Jimmy on drums–I don’t believe individual tracks with broad gaps between can demonstrate that. By the time the album is fully assembled (one to two years) one could very possibly be burned out on the early releases and unable to grasp the fully concept of the album. Oh yeah, its a concept album. Hopefully, this project will either be a little more narrow in scope than Machina or actually finished.

Admittedly, this is just early speculation. The first track isn’t scheduled to drop until mid-November. I do like the open approach Billy is taking with this release though. There is more info about studio sessions and writing, interviews, etc. Even if you’re not a SP fan…if you know anything about the band you have to give them credit. They are constantly evolving.

To say that was exactly what I needed is an understatement. It’s interesting how “doing nothing” while not in ones hometown is perfectly okay….Anyway, got down to Murray around 5:30, leaving me with some time to waste before sunrise. Quick trip to Huddle House (I hate that place to peaces but seriously, where else can you get coffee that early?) and it was down backroads until I found this nice little niche to watch the sun come up.

I posted earlier about wanting a better digital camera and after viewing the pictures I took down there it made me want one that much more. Well, the early morning shots all sucked…I went down by the lake and took some better ones? I think… I’ll put ‘em up soon

Hung out there for a while, stopped at the Frap House for a quick fill up and it was off to 3rd floor lobby and pretty much watch every person I know left in Murray come by. I had forgotten how much Brant cracked me up. Anyway, I was heading out for lunch when I caught a guy writing me a parking ticket. Let’s just say carrying a backpack and wearing an MSU hat isn’t the best way to convince public safety you’re not a student…

The rest of the day was pretty much spent lounging around and getting caught up with everyone. A couple of my friends were kind enough to offer their couch for the night but, as they were all leaving at 6am for choir tour I decided a hotel would work a little better. The new hampton they had seemed pretty nice at first…until I hung my towel on the rack and it fell off. Oops.

The Wind Ensemble concert at Lovett was amazing… That’s pretty much all I know to say about that one.

*shrugs* That’s about it. Woke up the next morning and had to go back through LBL to actually walk some trails.

I miss it. I don’t want to let another year go by before I head down there..

All in all it’s been a fun vacation :)

I would like to take this moment to say I met Billy Corgan…and have witnesses to back it up.

Let’s start with a set list

Good show with a GREAT start.. GLOW is a new track and it was seriously rocking…heavy drums, catchy lyrics. They played a HARDCORE Machinaesque version of Siva that left me with my jaw dropped. Getting to hear Mayonnaise FINALLY played live made the show for me. While the rest of the show was quality, knowing exactly what songs they were going to play took some of the fun out of it.

I met up with Tim Smith after the show and we decided to go out back and see if we could catch the band coming out. We were taking our cues from this lady we met, Elizabeth. She seemed to definitely be “in the know” and achieved a level of stalker-craziness far surpassing both myself, Tim and Angela combined. After pointing out which was the roadie bus, which was the tech bus we made our way to the band tour bus. Around 20 minutes go by… ZZ Top comes out. Yes, ZZ top… I got a picture of two of them and shook hands and briefly chatted with the lead singer and guitarist.

They go away. It’s myself, Tim and Elizabeth on the front line with a crowd of 20 behind us…Jeff comes by.. Waves. Gets in the van. Bummer…I really wish he would have came to say hello

Billy comes out and he’s talking to some fans on the other side by the door.. 15 minutes later he’s standing directly in front of me having a conversation with the “front line” After thanking him for everything and BSing about the cubs, how shitty Kentucky is and me commenting how great it was to hear Transformer he looked me in the eyes and said, “Anything else you wanna ask?” So of course I froze up and kinda stammered out “I hope you come back by here soon!”

Meeting Billy Corgan definitely made tonight awesome
