LBL

I got bored one morning and drove to LBL to watch the sun rise and walk around for a bit.

blinking lights and other revelations…

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Stop lights swinging like a pendulum. The streets are deserted and the neon hues of the signs wash out the road. They become but a blot on my rear view as the countryside comes into focus. First four, then two the road narrows. Skid marks dot the pavement as visions of near-wrecks and conjures up burning rubber seeping through the windows.

Twisting and turning, navigating treacherous curves at near reckless speeds. Body and machine slowly becoming one as we thread the needle that still gets a thrill…the road straightens out, engulfed in darkness, passing a solitary flickering street light. Why only one? Perhaps someone had great dreams to expand their small town until they saw their budget drain slowly…

A truck flashes their lights at me and I nod back though he can’t see. I’ve found my counterpart in the night and wonder what brings them out. Going to work? coming home? Perhaps finding solace, warmth and comfort from a solitary drive. Windows down but a fresh cup of coffee balancing it all out. Balance. Warm/Cold, Silence/cacophony, enjoying my isolation but craving company from one who’d appreciate it.

The crisp nights of fall grab hold of my heart in a way no lover could. I find myself on a dirt road in the middle of a field. The winds breathe purity into my soul and the vibrant stars fill me with energy.

False Alarm

Posted on WKU’s web site and reputable news outlets…

There wasn’t a shooting on campus and the suspects have been arrested. My question is, how did these reports get started? I’ve witnessed a couple of “physical altercations” and there weren’t any reports of gunfire…the lock-down has been lifted but classes are still canceled for the day.

Did someone wig out and start screaming, “He’s got a gun?!” I’d appreciate it if anyone who has first hand knowledge could comment. The theory is that weapons were present but never fired and as they moved throughout campus they were ditched.

Not sure how much I believe that one. But, like I said…I’m just glad no one was hurt.

WKU Shooting?

From WBKO

“Western Kentucky University is under lock-down after the threat of a gunman on school grounds.

Kentucky State Police, Bowling Green Police, and WKU Police have evacuated South Campus.

Bowling Green Police have confirmed reports of shots fired on WKU’s main campus at Pearce Ford Tower.

Whether or not shots were actually fired is still unconfirmed.

Western Kentucky University officials sent out a text alert saying armed men have been reported at WKU’s South Campus. ”

I’m just hoping that all of my friends are okay…

the iPhone isn’t iPerfect

Picked up an iphone from work the other day…A couple of quick pros/cons since this is the first time I’ve actually carried one around longer then a day.

Pros

  • App Store - There are hundreds upon hundreds of useful applications and many of them free. FTP clients, ssh clients w/ transparency, mobile banking options, Pandora, the ability to take photos and automatically upload them to multiple websites (myspace, facebook, flickr etc)
  • Keyboard - Now, Previously, I had complained that it was harder to type on but after a couple of days using it and utilizing the autocorrect I’ve found my typing is faster and more accurate.
  • It’s an iPod Touch
  • Full HTML browser w/ zoom options. No more suffering through non-mobile enhanced web sites.

Cons

  • Inability to run background applications. This means, no playing Pandora while texting, no leaving on AIM
  • No status indicator. I’ve gotten REALLY spoiled with my BlackBerry and it’s multicolored status indicator. I don’t like having to unlock my phone to see if I have any e-mails, text, missed called etc.
  • No custom text tones. I realize this doesn’t actually affect the use of the phone but really…every phone I’ve had in recent times supports this. Really, do you know how many people use the “tri-tone” alert. I use custom tones so I always know when it’s MY phone.

I’ve used the iPhone for a week

To say that was exactly what I needed is an understatement. It’s interesting how “doing nothing” while not in ones hometown is perfectly okay….Anyway, got down to Murray around 5:30, leaving me with some time to waste before sunrise. Quick trip to Huddle House (I hate that place to peaces but seriously, where else can you get coffee that early?) and it was down backroads until I found this nice little niche to watch the sun come up.

I posted earlier about wanting a better digital camera and after viewing the pictures I took down there it made me want one that much more. Well, the early morning shots all sucked…I went down by the lake and took some better ones? I think… I’ll put ‘em up soon

Hung out there for a while, stopped at the Frap House for a quick fill up and it was off to 3rd floor lobby and pretty much watch every person I know left in Murray come by. I had forgotten how much Brant cracked me up. Anyway,  I was heading out for lunch when I caught a guy writing me a parking ticket. Let’s just say carrying a backpack and wearing an MSU hat isn’t the best way to convince public safety you’re not a student…

The rest of the day was pretty much spent lounging around and getting caught up with everyone. A couple of my friends were kind enough to offer their couch for the night but, as they were all leaving at 6am for choir tour I decided a hotel would work a little better. The new hampton they had seemed pretty nice at first…until I hung my towel on the rack and it fell off. Oops.

The Wind Ensemble concert at Lovett was amazing… That’s pretty much all I know to say about that one.

*shrugs* That’s about it. Woke up the next morning and had to go back through LBL to actually walk some trails.

I miss it. I don’t want to let another year go by before I head down there..

All in all it’s been a fun vacation :)
