It’s the end of the world as we know it…

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Okay, last night I had another apocolypse dream…Only this one was kinda cool a la fallout3 without the actual nuclear holocaust…I can’t remember exactly what was causing the end of the world. Only, my friends and I were staying in this ritzy five star hotel when the power grid was completely destroyed. Operating on emergency power we sat out to grab as much food and supplies as possible–for some reason, most of the guests and already evacuated.

My group had managed to secure the top floor by fencing in the elevator doors (in case someone wanted to climb) and by knocking out all stairs and replacing them with ladders and pulleys w/ a basket to bring up supplies. A sound powered telephone was used to alert the guard (Okay, wtf did I get a sound powered phone?) One of the first restaurants we came across inside the restaurant also doubled as a candy store–chocolate covered pretzels, banana chips, all kinds of freeze dried goodness and what else? *ding* a food dehydrator! Figured we can hook that up to a car battery and help preserve some of the food before everything spoiled.

We had setup a makeshift base. Raiding the supply rooms, the suites and all the restaurants for whatever was available. The bad news was more and more of those outside were coming to the hotel looking for food. Realizing that we couldn’t turn everyone away–nor can we defend against the truly motivated, we decided to leave and look for something that was a bit easier to defend. Opening up the elevator shaft we rigged a basket to the line and lowered down all of our suppliers in the dead of night.

…which at that time it went from a typical city / suburban town into something out of Arabian Nights involving Camels, desert, and a caravan…

Only to arrive at another suburban cul-de-sac which was eventually secured a la I am Legend with pull-down metal shutters on all points of ingress. It was a two story house plus a basement that served our purpose quite well. Breaking down the wall in the basement a cellar was dug out to aid in storage

then I woke up.

I’m sitting here waiting for the coals to die down enough to throw the steak on the grill. Steak, grilled red peppers, grilled squash and french bread…mmm my mouth is watering already.

This marks the end of Week One exercise and eating better. Down three pounds and have walk/jog/walk/ran 5mi a day + strength training every other day. Also, aside from my birthday I haven’t smoked a cigarette this week…Finished my last pack a week ago today. Between trying to lose weight and gain endurance it gives me added incentive to quit. It’s hard to quit when one is just lounging about. It’s actually been fun…I’ve forgotten what an endorphin rush it can be. I will say I’m definitely taking it slowly until I ease my way back.

ah, coals should be about done.

uh-oh

I did something really stupid the other day…But, it was incredibly fun! What’s this you ask? Well, one advantage to this forced vacation is that I’ve been getitng out to the parks a lot, walking trails and just generally being able to get out and enjoy this beautiful weather! My camping supplies are slowly getting built up along with some fishing gear and plans with a couple of friends to hit up a lake and go fishing. Oh, the stupid thing?

Well, I was out at Panther Creek and the main trail was still closed from the Ice Storm in January (yes it was so severe it deserves capitalization) and I was feeling froggy…So, I went walking. A couple of small downed trees in the way of the trail that were easy to go around. Coming to the first bridge I notice it’s out. Oh well, the creek bed is dry and it’s a very small bridge. Walking along the downed trunk it’s easy to pass. I’m about a mile into it when I get to a quite larger bridge…But, i notice the steel support beam on the right looks intact. My first thought is I should turn back.  My second thought is–”I have good balance. I can do this.” My third thought is…If this thing falls, it’s going to hurt, especially if I land on the beam. I decide, full speed ahead and balance my way across making it through safe and sound.

What’s life without a little risk?
