Ubuntu
Wednesday, April 5th, 2006I have successfully dual-booted my iBook and am loving Ubuntu as a laptop OS. The install process was very straightforward and it gave you the option to copy the packages to your HD so you won’t need the CD.. Updating was very straightforward and for safety the root account was disabled, all commands had to be done through sudo… I enabled it shortly after. heh
After a day of use I’m beginning to like it a bit better then OS X.. I’m sure if i had one of the new apple laptops i’d love os x 10.4 but on this older 800 mhz it can seem a tad sluggish when running multiple applications (office x, dreamweaver etc) I haven’t found any such problems w/ Ubuntu (I had firefox, gaim, openoffice and a couple of consoles open) I’m looking for some decent web editing software and an decent gui ftp client.. I wouldn’t recomment it for the poweruser but that only comes from my lack of knowledge of software available. It’s energy settings are nice, it auto-detected my usb wireless card.. Praises all around
and Derek, you should be pleased I’m working on something that isn’t *BSD based ;)
Maybe I’ll dual-boot my desktop w/ FC5… nah
