I must warn you that this LJ entry is quite jumbled

I’m in the middle of Tuesdays with Morrie which is required reading for freshmen at Murray. I found it quite surprising that this work was selected for reading at a university. At first I almost laughed at the simplicity of it all, but wound up laughing at myself as I realized this work was carefully and cleverly chosen for a purpose. Although a simple work when judged by literary criteria the philosophical questions that should come to the mind of the reader are questions that while remaining simple, are questions that people should be aware of especially before entering something as life changing as college. What’s important to me? What do I want out of life? Not just questions but realizations as well. Love
and self-discovery are two of the largest themes of the book. These two themes are also the reason why I’m asking myself so many questions this evening.

Before I started this book I was feeling pretty depressed about being in Owensboro. The night before was probably one of my favorite nights of the summer. Allison invited me up to Louisville and it is safe to say it was a night of first times. My
first time driving to Louisville, more specifically my first time driving (or going) to Churchill Downs. I only had to ask
for directions once!
We stayed for about five races. I won $8.40 on one race and Allison won $3.00. The conversation, gambling, the little man
with the trumpet all made for the start of a nice night. Allison, saving me the embarrassment, asked a parking attendant if she could leave “her” car there for a while. After getting the go-ahead, I rode with her to Buckhead Mountain Grill where we met up with Amanda, Deya, Neesha and Bob. I don’t think words could adequately summarize the level of insanity our
conversation reached. I do however have some pictures that Neesha took with my camera phone that I’ll upload sometime.

After dinner we found our way to Waterfront Park (after driving past 4th st live…man Owensboro sucks) Nothing happened at the park. We just played on the playground, went crazy on a swing and talked. It was a lot of fun. Why don’t my friends here enjoy stuff like that? Every time I suggest going on a hike or even just going to Legion Park for a bit
it’s always quickly dismissed unless it’s late at night, dark and a breeze is present.

Allison took me back to my car and everyone, sans Neesha, met up at Central Park for a free production of Macbeth. It wasn’t the best production I saw but the fact that it was free was so cool that it made it wonderful. I will say the set was very
well decorated though.

I also experienced the Heine Coffee Shop for the first time. It puts BAM and Beyond the Brim to shame. Allison and I sat and talked for a good hour before it was time to leave. It was great to be able to see her outside of an FBLA conference.
Although I must admit our talk did include FBLA a great deal and part of me wants to establish a PBL chapter at Murray.

The ride back to Owensboro was fairly uneventful but when I reached the bypass my spirits took a small plunge as I realized I was bck in the town where nothing happens. I thought about going to Murray this fall… Murray is just as dead of a town…the only difference is the amount of people around my age range. I hope to meet plenty of friends who share similar interests
and can take pleasure in the smaller things in life. People who don’t feel the need to get hammered every night, fuck
anything that moves…  Part of me worries about this… I want to be surrounded my people who share the drive for success that I do.
